We’re hiring two trainee data visualisation designers

Come and work with The Economist’s
data journalism department

The Economist has featured charts and maps for over 150 years. With around 100,000 under our belt, we’re looking for two trainee data visualisation designers to help us make some more. Our data journalism team produces all of the charts, maps and diagrams for the web, our apps and the print newspaper—including our award-winning Graphic Detail section. You’ll work closely with fellow designers and journalists making charts for print and the web that illuminate stories on the whole range of topics we cover: from finance to football and from chickens to China.

Duration

Six-month-long traineeship with full-time hours

Location

  • Although much of the work will be done remotely, one trainee should be based in the Eastern Time Zone, ideally close to our office in New York or Washington, DC. The other should be able to work from our central London office for one or two days a week.

This is an entry-level traineeship, intended primarily to help aspiring data visualisation designers gain skills and experience. We do not require any specific previous work history or technical abilities other than good design skills, an understanding of the basic principles of data visualisation and a strong working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. Any experience with the following would also be beneficial:

  • GIS mapping software (we use QGIS)
  • R or Python
